biography

Leslie Matthews’ arts practice extends over 34 years, primarily a contemporary jeweller, she has also undertaken several architectural commissions. Leslie has been involved in many local, national and international exhibitions and produces a range of contemporary jewellery and objects for galleries around Australia.

Throughout her career Leslie has had the opportunity to undertake several overseas artist residencies. Including the Australia Council residency at the  British School at Rome, and the Barcelona Studio, Spain, Artist in Residence at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, New Zealand and the Japan/South Australia Cultural Exchange, through Arts South Australia.

Teaching has also been an important part of her practice, for 16 years (2001-2017) she has lectured within the School of Art, Architecture and Design, University of South Australia (sessional) and from 2007-2010 was the Studio Head of Jewellery and Metal.

Currently Leslie is a PhD Candidate, within the School of Art, Architecture and Design at the University of South Australia. Previous to this she undertook a Master of Visual Arts (Research, 2006), both these fields of study have broadened her practice and knowledge in the area of contemporary art and craft.
