The Riband balcony balustrades situated in the Holdfast Shores Marina, Glenelg, South Australia were designed with
reference to the forms and shapes used in the making of wooden sailing boats. The design also incorporates the
overlayed connection with the written and visual image of the human anatomy, these terms are synonymous with boat building.
In developing the designs for the balustrades, I looked at the many varied images relating to marine iconography and
boat designs. Through this research I chose in particular the outline of a small sailing boat as the outer form of the sculpture
and used stylised ribs of a boat to provide visual strength to the internal structure. The balustrades were cast in silicon bronze,
two individual patterns–moulds consructed then eight castings made of each form. The forms are welded to a marine grade
steel frame and the surface of the bronze has a coating patination for colour and texture. The bronze forms have been placed in
alternating concave and convex patterns to give it movement and energy as they flow around the balconies.
